All Ops are requested to read this Notice
Since for so long this was considered the most boring page on the Dubaichat web pages, we thought we would do something about it.
The criteria for selecting an Op is highly subjective and is often a matter of personal opinion. However, various qualities you will find in most of our Ops will give you an idea what is needed.
So, here are some pointers on what it takes to become a junior (below 400) OP (Operator) on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Undernet's Channel #Dubai.
Start by asking yourself: "Would I still be in #Dubai if I were not an OP there."
If you can answer "YES," then read on ...

- Has not in the past Flooded and disrupted #Dubai with malice (added 3/May/01)

- Doesn't take offense or demand reasons after reasons when not given OPs (added 3/May/01)
- Doesn't mass invite people into #Dubai (added 31/Oct)
- Knows some of the regulars in the channel
- Knows most of the regular Ops
- Knows most of the Senior Ops (400+)

- Knows how to ban and kick a person
- Knows how to unban and invite a person (including through X)
- Knows how to voice and devoice a person (added 3/May/01)
- Knows about the different Levels of OP you can be (1-500)
- Knows how to use the Bot X - though doesn't have to be a technical expert
- Should not be an Etisalat employee or agent or represent them in any way :)
If you need to ask how to become a 400+ Op ... then you aren't ready for it :)

Note for OPs :- May 2001
OP Begging has become a nightmare for the senior OPs in #Dubai.

they will be sent here to read this notice and their nickname will be placed on
a "Watch List" of people who shall NOT BE OPed.If they then ask for OPs even one more time, they will loose their chance to be considered for OPs.
Presently the following are on the Watch List:
- UAE_Bosss
- ^Police^ (police999)
- Cool aka Blazit (syed110)
- Burnyy (burny)

Reason Why this Notice was put up is explained in more detail here.
Note for OPs :- March 2001
Due to the following reasons:
- Constant request by new and not so new Ops in #Dubai for Higher Access Levels
- Apparent attempts to establish Power Cliques in #Dubai
- Buggy Scripts that kick regulars and those chatting peacefully in the channel
- Disgruntled Ops who have been suspended - now flooding the channel with clones and hate messages
- Further venomous threats being made against channel #Dubai
It has been decided that any Ops not involved in adding new users or in regular channel administration will have an Ops level of 100. There shall be no requests entertained, or cases heard, or negotiations made, for any change to this arrangement until some not yet decided future date. Meanwhile it is suggested you use the channel for chatting, and not for gaining a higher Access Level or Power.
Thank you.
(23 March 2001)
Ops list and Access levels will be updated shortly.
Guidelines for Ops in #Dubai
Ops don't kick or de-op each other
This is a rule with a bit of elasticity. Obviously if it is some sort of joke between the Ops, it is not a problem. If an Op's script goes crazy, or the Op is away and their script is interfering with channel operation or other Ops, you may have to kick or de-op another Op until the matter can be resolved. By the same token your own script may auto-kick or auto-de-op an Op during certain events or due to an action. If so, please correct or disable it. The point to this is that you are NOT to use your status as an op to interfere with other ops. It gives the channel a bad image, and creates discord in channel.Ops don't ban each other
This is a rule which should not be broken unless there is a serious breach causing disruption in the channel. (added 3/May/01)Ops: Don't abuse your ops privileges
As well as the abuses listed above, Ops don't abuse the users by kicking or banning users as a joke or for personal or trivial reasons. A lot of users consider Ops as only privilege, with no consideration of the responsibilities, and are envious of the status. Lording it over them doesn't help. By the same token, a lot of users consider any criticism of them or their behavior to be a personal or trivial attack, and an abuse of Ops. Try not to give them an excuse to claim abuse, but don't bend over backwards tolerating trash from them. Use your own judgment and count on the other Ops to support you. Some people will claim abuse no matter how fair you are.Ops: Don't wash #Dubai laundry in the open channel
Matters pertaining to misunderstandings between Ops and administration disputes of #Dubai or the Dubaichat WebPages must be discussed outside the channel.Giving Courtesy Ops
Giving Ops to non-voted-in ops can cause a lot of trouble. Many scripts people use have backdoors that allow people to control the channel through the Op'd persons client. This has happened twice before and caused major headaches. You can op another regular user, but you will be responsible. Please ensure they at least know the common rules of our channel, and de-op them immediately on any sign of abuse or trouble. Please also do not object if another regular Ops wants to de-op the person.Inviting friends promising them OP
Doing this causes a lot of problems. Ops in X are for regulars who support the channel and enjoy being in it because they want to be. Not because they have Ops. No one should get Ops in X until they are both regular and fulfil the criteria set out here.Bans set by an Op in X
Bans in X should be specific when possible and not by site or domain unless absolutely necessary. They should also list a valid reason for the ban. Other Ops should really not lift a ban set in X without knowing first the reason it was set, and preferably discussing the matter with the person who set the ban.The hierarchy of Ops
This can basically followed by the Access level of the Op in X. Usually Ops will defer to Ops that are longtime IRCers, or persons of particular expertise on various subject, or persons whose personal opinion the particular Op happens to respect. Additionally, some Ops are on more than others, and by this are more often involved, informed, and available for consultation. This is a natural deference, and determined on an individual basis. Basically the hierarchy follows the pattern of 450+, 400+, and 400-.others.#Dubai is not a script-testing channel
#Dubai basically allows some big colorful popups and fancy greeting motifs. It is not however a captive audience for people who join the channel and unload their ASCII art files. Nor is the channel open for experimental scripts testing. The "sorry I just got this script, didn't realize the popups spewed profanity and insults" excuse isn't acceptable. Users should test a new script in an empty channel. We will not accept clones, Bots, obscene and insulting popups, multiple trout-slapping, one-man ASCII artshows, wav-floods, and weapons or script testing.Buggy Scripts
Similarly, if your scripts are buggy, and kick/ban people when they shouldn't be, de-op yourself and fix your scripts. Don't be surprised, and don't bother to act offended, if you find yourself suspended when you are seen to be causing problems because of your faulty or overly sensitive scripts.Lag
Don't be too quick on the kick. The person who appears to be offensive may not be in synch and may need more than a second or two before they see your warning. Allow for response time. Ping them if they just sit there. Then kick 'em.
Channel #Dubai acknowledges with thanks that it's OPs rules were pretty much formulated and lifted from #IRCNewbies on IRCnet.
