ADSL in UAE
is not
a 24 hours online service.
EIM have lied to us.

ADSL, sold to us as a 24 hour service - which is put as:
'No dial up, "Always On" connectivity',
is actually a 6 hour service.

Every session you log on has an expiry time of 6 hours. (actually now lowered to 3 hours)

That means every 6 hours your ADSL line will be disconnected by Emirates Internet if the expiry time does not get refreshed.

So when the Al Shamil ADSL service boasts:-

'Al Shamil gives you "Always On " Internet access. Just start your Internet browser or your e-mail software and you are on,'

It is a blatant lie.

But then, we are so used to lies now from Etisalat and its sister companies.

So why might Emirates Internet want to disconnect you? The Help Desk candidly say that:

They want to make sure you do not have a fixed IP number. Thus they disconnect you periodically so that you might be assigned a new IP number.

Quite an absurd way to make your life miserable.

Often after a disconnection, the software and hardware EIM have provided for ADSL means the only easy way to reconnect is to reboot the computer.

Latest Update 12/Feb/01

Have you noticed the lease time on ADSL is no longer 6 hours, but a paltry 3 hours!

We have been monitoring the ADSL connection over the past one week. Download speeds are advertised as being up to 384Kbps and uploads of 128Kbps.

Mon 13/Nov see ADSL speeds back above 250Kbps.

EIM send out a broadcast mail message to its customers apologizing for the debacle, and then try and qualify it by saying:

...as well we would like to inform you
that the World Wide Web (www) is under a major strain due to the ongoing events.

The Internet speeds with ADSL again slowed down to a crawl from midnight Sat 11/Nov, and continues at a crawl on Sun 12/Nov.

As usual the Help Desk vehemently claims there are no problems on the Networks, even after multiple reports from angry customers. Are they covering up? Or are the Etisalat Engineers withholding the true story again?

View proof of the slowdowns on the graph from the 5th to the 13th (14-Nov - 70 K jpg).

ADSL really jumping up and down, but basically the speeds are within an acceptable range the past few days. 5th to the 18th (19-Nov - 110 K jpg).

We took it upon ourselves to monitor the ADSL connection over the past 72 hours.

This was what led us to the discovery of the 6 hour expiry time of each session.

Saturday night, 4 Nov, ADSL was humming along at well over 250Kbps.

Sunday, 5 Nov, all day, speeds have yet to cross 10Kbps, with an average closer to 8Kbps.

All Sunday night and Monday 6 Nov, ADSL speeds still stay below 10Kbps. This is less than 5% of their advertised speed.

A graph of performance (6-Nov - 51 K jpg).
Updated graph (7-Nov - 49 K jpg).
Proof of Resumption (9-Nov - 50 K jpg).
From the 5th to the 9th (9-Nov - 34 K jpg).

11th November Slowdown again (11-Nov - 59 K jpg).
From the 5th to the 13th (11-Nov - 50 K jpg).

Tests were performed both to a remote file:
www.esynch.com/mw_test.dat
and to a local file at:
www.etisalat.co.ae/images/welcome1.gif

Back to Dial-up 56K while the
Dhs 250/month meter clicks on for the ADSL dis-service.

Finally on Wed 8/Nov ADSL speeds get back to a decent level. Will Etisalat refund us for 3 days of misery?

You can try if you dare.

The Genius KYE DSLI-800 dsl modem works perfectly with Etisalat, even better than the Efficient. And it works in XP! Setup for the modem is also much easier. The best dsl modem I think.

Is there any other ADSL modem (other then the Speedstream series) that work with Etisalat's ADSL Connection? That also work with Windows XP? Are they reliable? How much do they cost? Thanks!

All unfortunate early birds of Al-Shamil (ADSL), don't waste your time by looking for win2k or winxp driver for Speedstream 4020, say goodby to it or stick to win98. You can get a cheep and good internal modem for Dh.345 (DSLI-800) which is RFC 1438 that will work on win2k, we hope Genius (KYE) will bring the xp driver as well. Thanks to Stefan and BaldiLox for their early information.

For those live outside Dubai emirate can purchase it from UAEMALL. Follow this URL:

Did anybody make the XP drivers work wit hthe 4020 modems?

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition (ME), Windows 98 SE, and Windows 98 (1483 only)
for the SpeedStream 3060, 3061, 4031, 4060, and 5667 (USB) DSL modems.

OK
after you install the drivers... double click on the Efficient icon on the system tray... next to the clock... choose Diagnostics tab... then click on the AutoConfig button... configure to VPI=0 and VCI=100... then choose manual then 1483 Routed Ethernet... it will say that it couldn't detect or something... just ignore any error messages...

I hope this helps... since I don't want to reset my settings to check the exact procedure.

I am looking for other hardware ADSL modems... but how do I know if they work with Etisalat... I am sure they'll say ONLY Efficient...

The only thing that works 100% in Etisalat is the billing printer !!!

The funny thing is that I have contacted Etisalat before installing WinXP... and they said that they don't support XP AND the drivers 3.4.1 (http://support.efficient.com/drivers/ss30/index.shtml) do NOT WORK with ETISALAT.

BUT THEY DO... just choose (1483 Routed Ethernet) MANUALLY. BUT for some reason it takes time to connect to the network... sometimes requiring a reboot just to try to reconnect... but it works... better than nothing !!!!

AND GUESS WHAT?!?! THe drivers of the final build at http://support.efficient.com/drivers/ss30/index.shtml dont even allow you to use the 4020 or 3020 under any OS under any connection.
So, all of you people who have 4020 or 3020, guess what, any drivers that efficient make from now on will not work for your modem. CIP connection is not supported at all in any of their
drivers, so I, as an Al Shamil user, feel really bad towards Etisalat and Efficient, but more toward Etisalat, as they are not upgrading their systems to support different connections
such as 1483 which will work under XP with the Efficient final drivers. I say that we write a huge petition or email explaining all these different situations and cirumstances to Etisalat
and if you want to be a part of this, write to me at kaakhvan@hotmail.com, or add me as a user in Messenger with the account of viper_505@hotmail.com under messenger.
I do not use kaakhvan@hotmail.com for chat purposes, I use it only for email.

viper505 wrote on October 30, 2001 at 19:08:43 :
Efficient WILL NOT SUPPORT ETISALAT UNDER XP or any other OS ANYMORE!!!!! I wrote an email to the head technical supervisor, Daniel Winterrowd and he said that all drivers that
are going to be produced from now on will not support CIP RFC 1577, and Etisalat's 4020 and 3020 are no longer supported under any circumstances and no drivers will support them
even under any connection, whether it be 1483, or PPoE, not even CIP. 4060 is still supported but not under CIP. They wont even make CIP drivers for 4060!!! Efficient took off the site for the unsupported beta drivers that sort of work under CIP, as they will not support
old standards like CIP. They will only support 1483, PPoE, PPoA, but NO CIP. I also talked to Etisalat before I wrote this email to Efficient and
Etisalat said that they only use Efficient's drivers, as the current Al Shamil dsl drivers are just modified in name. ETisalat said that they dont make drivers, they get everything from Efficient as a normal user would, so they cant say make CIP drivers for us or else. SO Basically unless Efficient will make CIP drivers,
which they have said clearly they wont anymore, then we wont ever be able to use Efficient modems under XP with Etisalat. The official XP drivers are released
final build not beta, at http://support.efficient.com/drivers/ss30/index.shtml, but if you read carefully, you see that there is no support for CIP, so SUPPORT FOR ETISALAT! Daniel Winterrowd even commented that Etisalat should change the connection type, as many dsl manufacturers dont support CIP at all. We were lucky to
be able to have any driver for Win 98 and ME. One more thing, if you dont believe me, downlaod the final build drivers and try them under 98 or any other OS, you will see that they will not work, and no, CIP will not be produced just for Etisalat. Etisalat is the only ISP still using the 4020 and 3020, as Daniel Winterrowd
said. The 4060 is still supported, but not under CIP anymore.

For now, all those who can't be bothered waiting for Etisalat to produce Win2k drivers for their modems, head on down to Al Ain Centre (i.e. Computer Plaza) next to Spinney's Ramada. Take the escalator, turn right, the shop is the second one from Creative's.

P.S. I've tried the modem in Win98 and Win2000, but NOT in XP.
Thanks for the lead again Stefan :)))

Get the KYE DSLI-800 (http://www.kyecom.com/html/fullrate.html) internal PCI modem. (I bought it at the Al Ain Computer Plaza (1st floor, right-hand side) for DHS 375,-).

Use the following settings:

Protocol: classical IP over ATM, VPI=0, VCI=100

Works just perfect!

For anyone facing the problem of having to unplug and replug the speedstream 4060 every time you rsteart Windows to get the dsl up, Etisalats solution is to keep doing that.
However this might be a better way to solve the prob.
When your computer is booting up press get into the Bios settings area (Usually you press DEL)
In the menu which comes up look for PNP/PCI Configuration. If its not there, explore a bit
Within this menu theres an option qhich asks "PnP Os installed". the setting for this should be yes.
Look for an option for Bus mastering and enable this as well.
If you see an option which asks whether to assign an irq for usb, set it to No.
Now save the settings .When you boot into windows, if you've done it all right, the driver should be loaded automatically and your connection will be up

When you install the 4060, the "It is now safe to shut down" screen in win9x tends to disappear. In my case its replaced by orange and black stripes down the screen!!
Anyone know of a fix for this?

Why don't you all buy your own DSL modems, instead of going through Etisalat. You know that PCI and USB modem's aren't great. The Efficient USB and the ethernet model run on the came VCI which is 35. I actually use DSL in Houston, Texas with a local provider and they too give out the same modems as Etisalat does. However the ethernet DSL modem works great. With any operating system. Its like a network connection. By the way I am using Efficient Networks 5260. The best place to buy it is over EBay..

Here is some feedback we received on EIM's Business one service (Thu, 1 Feb 2001) :

Our company recently installed BusinessOne.
The Etisalat Service is B A D.
1st it took ages to get the papers processed at Etisalat.

They were on hold because of a misunderstanding on Etisalat's side. They just keep them on hold until you come back and check why no-one is calling you to inform about the installation. Finally after more than one month, they install the router. You have to pay in advance to get a password. They come an install a CISCO Router and leave you.

Fine. Surfing works but How do we use the email accounts?

You try calling the Sales people, they NEVER EVER reply. So you go over to Etisalat. They give you a number to call. You call that number in AUH they give you a number in DXB. The guys in DXB tell you, you have to log on to consolve.businessone.net.ae.

Fine you go there and try to log on but the PassWord you got previously is for the Router only. You call Dubai again and they tell you they have to create an account for you. That takes over a week!!!!!! And they managed to get it done that fast only because you keep calling every second day asking for the progress.

No you have the user ID and PassWord . You log on to the console and create an account.
What mail server do you connect to???????????????

mail.emirates.net.ae doesn't work.
You call them again they tell you to use vmail.emirates.net.ae

Ok, whatever. It still doesn't work. You call again they tell you when configuring your client use the form username+domainname.
Then it works.
How can a user change the PassWord of the account the admin created?

You figure that you log on to the same console, but with the users' account.
It works.

THIS IS THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!
Incredible what these people can get away with!!!!!

I bet no one at Etisalat ever took the time to plan the process of applying B1 from the start until the end.
It seems every department is working out of synch in is trying to do it's part.

Is it so difficult to write a small guide telling people how to use the system????

Signed
A VERY ANGRY ETISALAT CUSTOMER

Meanwhile we have hard that major delays in shifting ADSL lines were due to a technical problem Etisalat were facing.

What was the Technical Problem?
Their computer program couldn't print out the Service Order requisition!
Pathetic? or Pathetic?

apparently. it seems that the Transparent proxies all went down alltogether..
( A strike or something! ).
and direct connections to any site outside EIM Network isnt possible untill further notice.
thus.
ICQ / IRC / External POP3 mail / public proxies, are not accessible any more..
speed degraded down to a pathetic 110k Download to a 50k Upload.
Nice eh?!

Hi I am one of the all disappointed users of Etisalat Internet.
Let me tell you my story ( I am sorry if I have mistakes).
I paid for my ADSL connection on 28/10/00 and on 30/10/00 one guy came to check the cable and he told me that the resistance is a bit high but if I have paid for ADSL and I want ADSL, it is their job to take care about this issue and everything will be ok!

It was 18/11/00 when I got really mad and I went to Etisalat to check what is going on after trying to get some information by the phone, but as you know it is impossible to make Etisalat understand anything by phone. When I went there, at first nobody gave me an ADSL account number. It took a long time to have them find the number, and after waiting a long time, one guy told me that my connection has been cancelled. I couldn't believe it without anybody calling me to tell me, they had canceled my ADSL application!

This is unacceptable. Idiots. I hate them. And when I asked for my money back, they told me that they are going to transfer them to my GSM or to my phone account which I don't use so much especially the home phone which is only for Internet, and for nothing else. I try to send email to them with all that story and staff like that but nothing.

Every time I call on the phone they tell me call to the other one , on the next one they tell me call to the previous one and like that until I don't know when.
I am sorry for the mistakes as I am still improving my English. I want to ask you if you can please give me some advice on what to do with these people.

Thank you in advance.

Read the e-mail pasted below.. i dont think i need to comment.!
Dear Al Shamil user:
You might be experiencing some difficulty with your ADSL connection, due to an upgrade in our network.
If your are having difficulty in browsing, we recommend that you use the troubleshooting steps listed below:
Problem: ADSL modem installed, but unable to browse.
Hardware: Efficient 4020 USB Modem, Efficient 3020 Internal modem.
Action 1:
* Check ADSL status icon on Windows task bar.
* ADSL synchronization okay. Proceed to Action 2
* No ADSL synchronization. Ensure that the cable is properly connected to the wall jack. If status remain the same, contact EIM helpdesk.

Action 2:
* Press the start button on the task bar and select "Run".
* In the dialogue box that pops up, enter "winipcfg" and press OK.
* When the IP Configuration screen comes up, select the SpeedStream Adapter from the drop down list if it is not already selected.
* Press the "Release" button and then the "Renew" button.
* If you are still not able to browse please call the EIM helpdesk 800 5244.
We thank you for your time and patience and be assured that we are doing all we can to overcome these difficulties as quickly as possible.

Just recently subscribed to DSL service and still after well over two weeks, my service keeps disconnecting every 20 minutes.
As well, MS Messenger, which I used to use for dialing the US, now disconnects after 5 minutes.
Am I alone- I do not think so.
Thanks

Few days ago, i sent a fax to the Engineering Department manager of Etisalat, complaining about getting Disconnected each 6 hours!
The IP Lease for ADSL Expires after 6 hours from the time it was obtained.
It gets renewed automatically, and you get the same damn IP!.
But 4 some reason windows fails to go online again after the new lease is obtained, unless i renew the Lease by my self..etisalat took some action to correct the problem, and the only thing they did was, increasing the lease period to 12 hours instead of 6!!its better than nothing isnt it??
tell me what u think..RegardsLM

That Al Shamil proxy was bugging me.
Decided I had to know how well it compared.
Well, it's considerably faster than all the rest of the proxies I tested. And you can use it of your dial up 56K and ISDN too!

well!.. it seems that my last three messages were deleted, --inadvertently--. any how,,as a reply to free, the proxy that ADSL is using actually resides on 195.229.208 subnet its usually is 195.229.208.5 or 195.229.208.10 try to scan that subnet for port 80 services, you will get alot of hosts.. try to connect, you will get some wierd authentication page, ( level 15 somthing ).

ADSL lines sucked big time in the past 3 days.. today i have reports saying that they are back to normal speed. leased line users are advised to use a proxy rather than direct access -- just for the time being -- latest news is, my DSL line got Disconnected!!!!!.. etisalat people called me up to sign a paper stating that my line is working fine.. and when i refused to sign,, they disconnected my line :( now i have no other way but to sign.. what an abusive service :( any comments??? i guess nothing much could be said any how..
regards
Louis

WHAT is the Proxy being used by ADSL right now ???
Is this where the bottlneck is for ADSL?
Because switching to the proxy1.emirates.net.ae still gave this weird IP 194.170.1.132 and it whizzes through, while the normal direct connection is TERRIBLE !

The DHCP error occurs in the case of having Efficient speedstream 4020 more than any other modem, efficient support says that the way drivers were developed for the ( Weird ) special case of etisalat, drops any responsibility off efficient networks to support any problems that might occur, to simplify the case, when this error message shows up, in most of the cases your modem would be Mis-Communicating with the servers, ( packets being sent through the wrong channel ) because the CIP protocol that we are using utilises two Circuits, one for transmitting, the other for receiving ( VCI 50 and 100 ) each of these circuits should have a unique IP address ( which is the IPs of the gateways on your Subnet ). sometimes VCI 50 or 100 gets lost! ,.. no IPs are Given!, you might end up with no IP address at all., or in the least cases you will have an internet connection that can only SEND data or Receive data, -- that doesn't work anyways! -- generally speaking, microsoft says that this error message usually shows up when there is timing problems between the DHCP servers and the Clients, resulting in a fast timeout on the clients.

Etisalat is using this CIP protocol, because they are planning to expand the network. one VCI will be linked up with the external network at a speed of 386Kb the other VCI will be linked up with the internal network at a speed of 2,5Mb. I have all the proofs of their plans. I also have the infrastructure plans for DSL services. so trust me... I know what I am saying :)
