When using ADSL - or Al Shamil as it has been called here - the connection automatically goes through a proxy without having to configure your browser to do so. Sounds good? Some times. Some times not. As soon as the proxy server begins to slow down or freeze, which is quite often, you have to manually use another proxy such as proxy1.emirates.net.ae on port 8080 which itself is down a lot of the time). |
Even more bothersome
are some of the sites banned. The ban list on Al Shamil is very different to that on some
manual proxies, which is again very different to the automatic proxy pac. The banned screen displayed in Al Shamil looks like this. The link given there to report in a site which you want unbanned - does not work. So much for technology. (27/Sep/00) |

Hmm, So then ADSL is at the mercy of a slow proxy ? Computers are full of bottlenecks.
Unfortunately, ours is Etisalat :/ Where do you manually configure the proxy, special
software?
Editor's note:- In your browser configuration. Normally you set it for Direct
Connection to the Internet. Manually you do it just like with a dial up connection - in
the proxy settings.

Automatic proxy ?? nahhhh, well yaaa too. This is how its done. The gateway; in other
words the router that routes your requests to the rest of the world is your proxy too. And
that is set to port 80 which is http. This translates too ==> Every request of 80 or
other if applied would be taken by the gateway and proxied for you, and you don't need to
setup the proxy in your browser. Well this is one way of doing it, as I know, if its not
correct, please correct me if I'm wrong :) B.S.
