Congratulations to Sabah Mahmoud Akkou. She has won her law suit against eviction from her home. She was dismissed from her job of 17 years with ARBIFT (Arab Bank for Investment and Foreign Trade) after Mashreq Bank wrote a letter to ARBIFT alleging she was using its former registered Internet domain name "mashreq.com" to access confidential information.

Amazingly ARBIFT terminated Akkou's services on these alleged grounds. Her lawyer said she was dismissed without investigation of the allegations. So reports Gulf News. The story first appeared back in late June in the Gulf news.

Mashreq Bank's domain name is - mashreqbank.com - and their site is still under construction even though it was registered in March 1996! Ms. Akkou is using the domain she legally owns (also under construction still) to promote the company "Al Mashreq E-Commerce" in Abu Dhabi. She also owns mashreq.net & mashreq-e-commerce.com

The following domains are owned by MashreqBank:  mashreqvirtual.com/net/org mashreqonline.com/net/org   mashreqbank.com /net/org mashreq.org
Only mashreqbank.com  and mashreqonline.com  are operating.

Mashreq Banks' case looks suspect when one digs into the dates of registration.
mashreq.org - record created 28-Feb-2000
mashreqbank.net - record created 28-Feb-2000
mashreqbank.org - record created 28-Feb-2000
And then Ms. Akkou registered mashreq.com on 10-Mar-2000 - two weeks after Mashreq Bank had just renewed their domains. Sounds like Mashreq Bank are being bullies for their obvious lack of foresight.

mashreqllc.com , mashreqworld.com mashreqmillionaire.com/net/org emashreqbank.com almashreq.com/net/org almashreq.com e-mashreq.com e-mashreqbank.com almashreqbank.com al-mashreq.com/org are registered by what could well be cyber-squatters.

By the way, "mashreq" is a common Arabic word that refers to the "East" and is associated with "Sun rise." For example - "the Mashreq states" - those in the eastern half - such as "al-Mashreq al-Arabi", which directly translates as "the Arab East".

Windows is a regular english word, try using that as a trademark or domain name and see if M$ will not sue you or not.
I believe that Mashreq Bank has a legal right and in most cases in the West the Trademark owners win. Apparently Mashreq Bank chose a very wrong approach to solve the problem, they could have had it their way easily by keeping a low profile and starting legal actions instead of making that much noise and putting themselves in a bad light. That reminds me of Etisalat's retaliation against the "alledged Hacker". They also should just have let the legal system go it's way instead of making the statements they did. Eventually Mashreq Bank will get the domain name, no matter what the lady tries to do. She's just wasting her time.
